Technavio’s market research report predicts that the global two-wheeler anti-braking system (ABS) market steadily during the next four years and in terms of units, will post an impressive CAGR of nearly 60% by 2021.s The introduction of legislations for the installation of ABS systems in countries such as India will be one of the primary drivers for market growth. The Automotive Research Association of India under the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises made it compulsory for all the two-wheelers above 125cc to be equipped with ABS as a standard feature in 2016. Also, the Ministry of Road Transport made an announcement for all the new models of motorcycles with an engine capacity above 125cc to have ABS systems from April 2017 and existing models need to be equipped with ABS by 2018. With such mandatory regulations, the Indian government is trying to reduce the number of two-wheeler accidents in India. ABS helps avoid the wheels of the vehicle from locking and prevent skidding during hard or sudden braking. Though the ABS technology for two-wheelers is expensive and the extra fitment in two-wheelers will result in increasing the cost of bikes, the focus of the government towards the stability of the vehicle, will augment the market’s growth prospects.
One of the major trends that will gain traction in global two-wheeler ABS market in the coming years is the reduction in weight of ABS systems. One of the key vendors Bosch, recently announced its Bosch motorcycle ABS 10 at EICMA 2015. ABS 10 is approximately 30% lighter and 45% smaller in size than ABS 9 and has high-level standard features and functions compared to its older systems. The system weighs only about 0.7 kg, has a cost-effective design, and is half the size and weight of the previously designed ABS by Bosch for motorcycles. Kawasaki has already launched its Versys-X 300 that is equipped with the lightweight ABS 10 developed by Bosch.
